Introducing Depth From Camera demo

This release contains a free demo that showcases monocular depth estimation done locally with a deep learning model optimised for real time, using as input any of the cameras available from your device.

This can be seen as a tech preview, to test the ability of generating depth maps from single images in different scenarios.

Since no internet access is required and only a single image is needed to obtain the depth map, this technology can be applied to a wide range of applications.

Better quality depth maps are possible with larger models and more processing time, but the underlying technology is basically the same.

I have used depth maps a few times to create fog effects and depth of field effects in images. Another thing I'm interested in is the surface normal estimation from a 2d image documented here: https://omnidata.vision/demo/

I wonder if it would possible to create an offline version of that that is easy to use please, I have no idea how or if it is possible but I thought I would ask you.

Hi Christine,

Yes, it is possible to generate both, the depth map and the normal map from a single image.

I might end up publishing a tool like that at some point.

Thanks for replying, that would be really great if you would, I can definitely think of some uses for it.

Hi Christine,

I just published Depth And Normal Maps from Image which might be relevant to what you are looking for.

Thank you, thank you!
